Thailand Premier League club Muangthong United FC has reportedly threatened to cancel Melyvn Lorenzen’s contract if he travels to Morocco and plays for Uganda at the AFCON tournament.

According to Paul Mukatabala the National Team’s Officer, Lorenzen is determined to play for his country despite a threat of a contract termination from his own club.

Lorenzen recently returned to the national team fold after 10 years as Uganda played against Chad and Morocco in last month’s international break.

Besides Lorenzen, defender Timothy Awany is also facing a similar threat from his club FC Ashdod in Israel.

According to Paul Mukatabala, Awany was told that participating in the upcoming AFCON could lead to his contract termination.

“Of course we can’t stop you from going for the AFCON tournament, as it’s a FIFA Regulation, but just know this, if you go, this could lead to your contract termination.” Mukatabala quotes the Israeli club via his official X handle.

FIFA has already informed all clubs to release African players for the AFCON tournament by December 15th which is six days before the tournament.

Uganda is expected to depart for Morocco on Monday 8th with the official squad announcement expected very soon.

The Cranes will battle against Nigeria, Tunisia and East African neighbors Tanzania in Group C of the tournament.
